We are in the process of buying a house that sits on 10 acres of land. The land was leased to a farmer in the past so it is fairly clear, just a bit overgrown. I was wondering if you might have any suggestion on how to use that land. We are going to eventually put a barn out there but I was wondering what you thought or where I might find more ideas for our big backyard.

One of the nicest things about having 10 acres is that you can divide it up into different areas, each with a theme. You can grow vegetables, a cutting garden, an informal garden for entertaining (complete with BBQ or grill), etc. I'd start by jotting down some ideas about what you'd like to do outdoors and then sketching out different areas with different purposes. Once you've done that you can collect lists of suitable plants. It's going to be a long process but a rewarding one when everything is in place. Check out some books and magazines at your local library for inspiration and ideas. Most of all, enjoy your new property!
