my tree is dying on one side

Without more details I can only suggest that either the one side was damaged by winter weather (icy winds, perhaps) or that part of the root system is stressed. If it is winter damage, the tree will develop healthy new branches. If it is a root problem, the tree may not recover - unless you determine just what the problem might be and correct the conditions.
