The Q&A Archives: Lupins covered in bugs

Question: Hello. My lupins are covered in bugs and the blooms have a layer of fuzz on them. What is this? Help! Thanks for a great site!

Answer: The most common pests of lupines are aphids. These can be controlled with a strong stream of water from the hose or with sprays of insecticidal soap. The fuzz might be a fungal disease or it might indicate mealybugs. They have a white cottony coating. See if you can peel the fuzz off and look at it with a magnifying glass. Mealybugs will be pinkish or yellowish on the underside of the fuzz. If they are mealybugs, the insecticidal soap should take care of them, too. Best wishes with your lupines.
