| Immaturity or too much fertilizer are the most common reasons for a bougainvillea's failure to bloom. Your plant may need to grow up a little more, or perhaps it is getting too much fertilizer. This can happen even if you do not deliberately feed the plant. If it is growing near a lawn or other plants that you regularly fertilize, the roots may be getting on overdose of nitrogen. This will result in lots of lush, green growth, but at the expense of flowering. Bougainvilleas bloom over a 6-8 week cycle. They love the heat, which makes them grow. They flower on new growth and then rest for a few weeks. Then they grow, bloom, and rest again. since they flower on new growth, pruning yours back should encourage new growth, which should flower for you in about 6 weeks. Give it a tray and see if it works for you. Hope so. |
