The Q&A Archives: For the birds

Question: I pruned back a couple pine trees and now there is a lot of newly exposed soil of which I weeded and raked but there are way too many birds. How can I get rid of them?

Answer: Now that you have exposed buried seeds and insects, the birds are having a field day! As soon as they deplete the store of pine seeds and insect pests, they will move on. Until then there's nothing you can do to deter them, except perhaps to cover over the bare soil with compost or sand. That will cover up the food they are so busy eating.
