The Q&A Archives: bleach applications

Question: how much bleach should be applied to control fungus and desease and spittle bugs in a lawn made up of zoizia grass.

Answer: Bleach will kill your lawn so don't use it - at any dilution rate. For fungus in grasses, Corn gluten meal is the best control. Apply about 15 pounds corn gluten meal per 1000 sq.ft of lawn, and water it in. Or, you can disolve 4 teaspoons baking soda per gallon of water, and spray it lightly. The corn gluten meal will work a little better and it also adds many nutrients to the soil, as well as being a deterrant to weed seeds to germinate. You can simply wash the spittle bugs away with a stream of water from the hose. The spittle they manufacture protects them from the sun and from predators. If you wash away their protective spit, the sun will harm them and birds and other insects will feed on them. Good luck with your lawn!
