The Q&A Archives: Tall plants for deep shade

Question: I have a deep shade area that is far away from my ability to water and has dry soil. I am looking for some tall if possible flowering plants what would you recommend? Could I plant some of my wild ginger which I have a lot of?

Answer: It's really difficult to find drought tolerant plants that will grow in deep shade. Viburnum is one exception. This shrub will grow tall and wide, tolerates deep shade and flowers in the spring. Wild ginger should be fine and jasmine will also flower and grow well. It develops into a shrubby shape. Wish I had more suggestions for you!
