The Q&A Archives: Mulch question

Question: I was told that if mulch touches the Pussy Willow plant that it will help the spread of disease to the plant. Is there any basis to this and if so how far away should the mulch be to the plant.

Answer: If mulch is placed against the stems and trunks of plants it can hold too much moisture and cause rotting. An inch or two away from the stems is a good distance. It doesn't matter whether the plant is a pussy willow or something else - keep mulch at a distance and you won't have to worry about damage to the bark of the stems. Enjoy your garden!
