Hand pulling is the best approach, and then covering bare soil with a thick mulch such as several thicknesses of newspaper or cardboard to suffocate the plants and stop seeds from germinating. You can top the newspaper or cardboard with straw and then dig everything into the garden at the end of the season, which will help enrich your soil. Or, after pulling out the crabgrass you can use a pre emergence product such as Preen for Vegetable Gardens. It will keep weed seeds from germinating but it won't kill the existing weeds so pull them out first. Good luck with your garden.
