| I have a slope which is 30 ft. long and 3 ft. wide. The slope is covered with ivy geranium which has begun to die out in sections. The soil has become hard and the water runs off or the plants too large for the sprinkler system (or both). Any suggestions for plants that would blend well in the bare areas that appear not to get enough water without having to constantly amend the soil? Thank you. |
| The site you describe will make it difficult for any groundcover plant to become established, but here are a few of the most hardy and tolerant of such conditions: Pink Panda Strawberry, Lantana, Acacia redolens, Helianthemum nummularium (Sunrose), Gazania, Dwarf Rosemary, and Malephora (Ice Plant). Get them off to a good start by first amending the planting bed so the roots can become established quickly and build half moon watering basins on the downside of the slope to collect water while the plants are new. The indentations in the soil will eventually erode away, but until they do they will collect water, which will help the plants become well established. Best wishes with your slope! |
