| My calla lilies have finished blooming and the foliage is still green. I need to move them for remodeling reasons. However, they were interplanted with sword ferns, which I have already moved. They have tall stems and will not support themselves without the ferns, so I staked them up. Can I now remove the stems without damaging the bulbs? Also, how do I replant? Depth, spacing, location, etc? |
| Since your Calla Lilies have finished blooming, you can cut the flowering stems down to the level of the foliage. The plants grow from tuberous rhizomes so divide them after you dig and before you replant, if they've become overcrowded. Transplant them to a sunny or partly shady bed into which you've added some organic matter (peat moss, compost or leaf mold). Callas like moist soil so water them well after transplanting, and mulch the bed after planting to help keep the soil moist. Set the rhizomes 4-6 inches deep and 1-2 feet apart. |
