Tibouchina Granulosa is one of the best flowering trees for your gardening region so I think your friend made a good recommendation. This Brazilian native does not get very big, reaching an average of 15 feet. It will grow in full to partial sun, and on the new growth, therefore trimming the plant right after flowering will encourage more new growth and consequently more flowers. I think it would be the perfect tree for your landscape.
