The Q&A Archives: weed control

Question: can I use a broad leaf weed killer in my iris bed?

Answer: A broad leaf weed killer will also affect your irises. I would hand pull the weeds rather than take a chance that you will ruin the irises. Or, if the bed is very overgrown with weeds, dig up the irises after they have finished blooming, remove all the weeds from the bed and replant the irises. You can use a corn gluten meal based pre emergent on the bed to prevent new weeds and then cover over the bed with a thick mulch so new weeds won't sprout. Best wishes with your garden.
