Purple leaf plum trees are susceptible to aphids, borers, scales, mealy bugs, tent caterpillars and many others. Without knowing which is bothering the leaves of your tree, it's hard to make a recommendation. Try catching a few of the culprits in question. If they are caterpillars, you can control them with a biocontrol called Bt (sold as Dipel or Thuricide). If the pests are beetles you can use Spectracide Bug Stop Multi-Purpose Insect Control Concentrate or a neem oil based product such as Azatrol or Neem-Away. Be sure to apply according to label directions.
