My red rhododendron was red for 2 years. This year it has changed to a pinkish red. What happened?

Hybrid or named rhododendrons cannot change flower colors - the color is part of their genetic makeup. However, if a red flowering rhodie gets too much sunshine, the flowers can fade from a deep red to a pinkish red because of the sun exposure. Hope this information helps clear up the mystery.
