The Q&A Archives: peat moss

Question: why and when should I use peat moss?

Answer: Peat moss (milled spagnum peat) is occasionally used as a soil amendment when preparing planting areas. It is considered a source of organic matter and would be used to improve the soil structure to help it hold both additional air and water. It should be moistened prior to being mixed into the soil. It is also considered a good mulch material when spread 2-3 inches thick around plants. It helps suppress weeds, slows evaporation and provides nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. Best wishes with your landscape.
