I transplanted my rhubarb last fall to a sunnier location. I was told that you should not use the rhubarb the first year after planting or transplanting. Is this true and why? |
You can harvest some of the stalks from your rhubarb plant when it is young but the general recommendation is to just leave the plant alone the first year so it can gather energy from the leaves and develop a large and healthy root system. The leaves, through the process of photosynthesis, feed the roots. If you harvest too many stalks, fewer leaves will be on the plant and less carbohydrates will be manufactured for the roots. Hope this answers your question. |
