The Q&A Archives: Plant Tag Codes

Question: Hope this is as easy to answer as it is annoying to experience. Just bought some Balloon Flowers (Platycodon Grandiflorus) and have tried and tried to enter the Plant Code (THDB1464) to get a little helpful info, but I can't get any results from the search. Help! (and thanks).

Answer: Sorry you're having trouble accessing information on your new Balloon Flowers!

Expect your new plants to grow 12-24 inches high and 12-18 inches wide. Flower color is blue or sometimes purple-blue. It is hardy from zones 3-8 and prefers full sunshine but will flower with 4-6 hours of sun so partial shade is okay, too. It has low water needs once established and will adapt to average soil but will grow best in rich, well amended soils. In general, Platycodons are easy, trouble-free perennials that thrive in almost any soil as long as it is well-drained. They can easily adapt to grow in either full sun or part shade. Cut the whole plant back after the first hard frost. It will be slow to emerge in the spring but once it does it will flower freely.

Best wishes with your new plants.

Q&A Library Searching Tips

  • When singular and plural spellings differ, as in peony and peonies, try both.
  • Search terms are not case sensitive.
