The Q&A Archives: Will Astilbe Rebloom

Question: I have an astilbe that was planted a year ago. It bloomed nicely several weeks ago, and now the plumes are fading. If I deadhead them will they produce more plumes?

Answer: I'm afraid they only bloom once per year, but you can extend the bloom period by providing them with the right kind of care. They appreciate a rich, humusy soil in partial shade. Deadhead the plants when they are through blooming and then fertilize with a mild, balanced fertilizer. Divide plants every 3 years or so to keep the plants blooming vigorously. Enjoy!
