Aphids and caterpillars are the most common pests of basil and the best approach is to simply hose pests off with a strong stream of water. The leaves are tender and can be harmed by pesticides and since you will be consuming the leaves, you won't really want to spray anything on them. I'd check the plants several times a day to find out what's eating them, and then hand pick or hose the pests off with plain water. Good luck with your basil!
