It is about 38 yrs old and hard to control! It is planted in front of a block wall, Gardener says i should use an arbor instead of a trellis, which hasn't worked.

Cecile Brunner roses are lusty, to say the least. If yours is outgrowing its spot in the garden you may need to prune it back, not only in the winter (December) when it is not actively growing, but after it has finished blooming, as well. Periodic clipping will encourage new growth and flowers, but will also allow you to reduce its size. I'd start now. Prune it back by selecting random canes and reducing their sizes at random intervals. leaving 2-4 buds on each. New growth will develop from these buds. Good luck with your climber!
