Can maple trees be grown in southern Florida? Will they loose their foliage in the winter months like they did in my home state of Ohio?

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) will not do well in your area. However, Drummond Red Maple (Acer rubrum var. drummondii) is native from Texas to Florida. It makes a nice tree and gives some fall color (though not what you get with the crisp, fall nights in the midwest) prior to winter leaf drop. In spring the tree turns a beautiful red as the bright red v-shaped samaras appear.

Check with local nurseries for availability of the Drummond Red Maple. Nurseries specializing in native plants are a good place to start.
