The Q&A Archives: tomato disease

Question: My tomato plants leaves near the ground are dying. hey turn yellow than brown. I have the plants staked. I have been breaking them off. What can I do?

Answer: Actually, the lower leaves on tomatoes usually turn yellow and die off as they age. I don't think there is a problem, especially if your plants are putting out new growth. I would continue breaking off the yellowing leaves as they appear. You can mulch beneath the plant to keep splashing water off the stems to maintain their health. Aside from that, there's really nothing you can or should do about the yellowing lower leaves.
