I want to install a patio floor (pavers or cement) under our tree. Will this harm the tree ? It is a mature white ash with a trunk diameter of 18

It is generally not a good idea to add fill over the roots of a tree, but if you set a base of sand and then place your pavers on the sand, rainwater will still be able to percolate down to the roots. As long as you do not pour a solid cement patio beneath the tree I think it will be alright.
