What caused this? Nothing except the core and outside

Poor pollination can cause the fruit to develop without seeds and be hollow in the center. Excessive heat is usually responsible for poor pollination in tomato plants. There's not much you can do to control the heat but you can try planting your tomatoes earlier in the year so they can flower and set fruit before the hottest months of the year.
