Answer: You should be able to plant some green beans now, and have plenty of time for a crop. Bush beans usually mature a little faster than pole beans. Your local garden centers might have a few tomato and pepper plants left for sale. I think it's a little too late to start those from seed. You might also be able to grow some short-season watermelon--probably not the biggest ones though.
In the past, when I have had this type of problem, I've arranged with a local farmer or farm supply stand to buy tomatoes by the bushel. Would this help?
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to foresee this type of weather--or diminish the devastation. Adding lots of organic matter to your soil can help increase drainage, and raised beds are also helpful in this regard. I hope this helps--if it makes you feel any better, my garden isn't looking to good right now either....I've never seen so many slugs!
