| I plant tomatoes, green beans, watermelon and green peppers in my garden and due to the very heavy rains, the plants all turned brown and died, too much water. Is it too late to re-plant at this late date?? I can tomatoes and green beans every year. Any suggestions as to make this better next year? |
| You should be able to plant some green beans now, and have plenty of time for a crop. Bush beans usually mature a little faster than pole beans. Your local garden centers might have a few tomato and pepper plants left for sale. I think it's a little too late to start those from seed. You might also be able to grow some short-season watermelon--probably not the biggest ones though. In the past, when I have had this type of problem, I've arranged with a local farmer or farm supply stand to buy tomatoes by the bushel. Would this help? Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to foresee this type of weather--or diminish the devastation. Adding lots of organic matter to your soil can help increase drainage, and raised beds are also helpful in this regard. I hope this helps--if it makes you feel any better, my garden isn't looking to good right now either....I've never seen so many slugs! |
