Poinsettias are of the Euphorbia family and exude a sticky white fluid when a leaf or stem is broken. Euphorbia pulcherrima, our Christmas poinsettia, is native to Mexico so I wonder if this is the plant you have? Various cultivars have various leaf colors so mostly green with a little red is normal for the plant. Poinsettias will grow outdoors in Florida, in sunny locations. If you pinch out the stem tips all summer you'll keep the plant bushy. Stop pinching in September and it should bloom for you around Christmas time. After the flowers have faded, pinch your plant back to encourage lots of new branches. Pinch throughout the summer to encourage branching but stop pinching by the first of September. Your poinsettia should bloom for you again in December. Enjoy! |
