The Q&A Archives: Pruning Phlox Subulata

Question: When is the best time to cut back Phlox subulata? I use it as a border with daffodils in the spring. When cut back can it be cut to the ground? Will it return in full form? Jane W. Davis Carrollton, TX

Answer: After the flowers fade, the tops of the plants should be sheared back about halfway; the plants then produce fresh foliage and may blossom again, sparsely, in the fall.
