The Q&A Archives: fish safety

Question: are terracotta pots safe or what would be the safest choice? I need the weight to keep the plants down,

Answer: Terra cotta or clay pots are fine in a fish pond. Or, use the black plastic baskets manufactured for the purpose. They have semi-solid netted sides for good water circulation and you can fill the bottoms of the pots with stones to help weigh them down. I've also just sunk plain black nursery pots pre-filled with aquatic plants from the nursery, and weighed them down by setting a couple of rocks right on top of the soil and rims of the pots. As the plants grow they hide the rocks. Hope this information helps!
