| I did have a tall, healthy bean plant growing with alot of blossoms. Now tomething is eating the plant-the leaves and parts of the vine. What is it and how can I protect my tomatoes and beans? |
| It's really difficult to guess what might be eating your bean plants. Try inspectng the plants several times a day to see if you can find the suspects. The most likely critters are Mexican Bean Beetles which can be a serious pest with beans. The adults are yellowish beetles, similar in size and shape to "Ladybugs" with 16 black spots on their backs. Larvae are fat, yellow grubs with long, spines. Yellow egg masses are on the undersides of leaves. Good control can be obtained in a small garden by using floating row covers. Also earlier plantings are usually less bothered by the beetles. Handpick (or hand squish as I usually do!) the bugs. Check and eliminate egg masses on undersides of leaves. If you find these pests you can use neem or pyrethrins as a spray if necessary. Best wishes with your plants! |
