Because I live in the city, I compost very few grass clippings or leaves, Mostly its kitchen residue (citrus peels, egg shells fruit pits, and garden trimmings. My question is, is there an effective way to grind and reduce to expedite breakdown? Electric leaf shredders would clog and a chipper seems overkill. |
There are kitchen scrap grinders available on the market but most gardeners find them messy and difficult to clean. On a small scale probably the best approach is a kitchen knife to cut most kitchen wastes into small pieces; fruit pits excluded! Yard waste can be cut with hand pruners. It is labor intensive but very effective since you know the finished product will be worth its weight in gold! |
