| Brown spots don't necessarly indicate insect problems - it could be that the lawn has an excessive amount of thatch, that the spots are caused by dog urine, or the soil is compacted. Compacted soils will not absorb water which can kill grass roots; thatch can keep water from penetrating, and the salts in dog urine can render the soil sterile. I'd do a little more investigating before assuming there are insects at work which are causing the brown patches. You can check for grubs by digging out some healthy turf along with the roots. If you find grubs hanging from the roots or on the soil, you can treat with GrubEx or Bayer Advanced. And, you can scrape your shoe over the top of the lawn to check for chinch bugs. If they are there they will jump onto the top of your shoe. Once you are sure the spots are coused by insects you can use Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer For Soil & Turf Granules.
