The Q&A Archives: arborvitae's on roof garden decks near shoreline

Question: how can u manage tree on roof gardens facing shoreline seacoast not far from ocean .about spray on tree's from the ocean please advise.

Answer: Unfortunately, arborvitaes are quite sensitive to salt so there's not much to suggest other than moving them to a protected place during stormy weather and hosing them off as often as possible to keep salt spray to a minimum. Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens) is very tolerant of salt spray, as is Yew (Taxus) so you may want to consider growing these on your rooftop deck instead of arborvitates.
