garden...new shoots are very dry and brittle...any suggestions? Older shoots look okay

If you planted in a shady spot and are watering often enough to keep the soil moist (but not soggy wet), I think some transplant shock is in effect here. As the roots become established the new growth should be normal. You can prune off the affected fronds as soon as the new growth looks healthy. Give your ferns another 3-4 weeks and they'll be just fine. Enjoy!
