Peeling bark is natural for some birch trees. It's an indication that it is maturing and gives the tree some character. Premature leaf loss is usually a sign of heat stress. Some birches drop leaves all summer long and others hold their leaves until fall. As long as you are watering regularly, and you see new growth, neither is a symptom of any particular problem.
