The Q&A Archives: Propagating Ornamental Grasses

Question: How can I propagate ornamental grasses from my neighbor's plants? Can I use the seed heads that are on the plants and have been on all winter? I live in zone 7 and it's been a mild winter. Thanks! Jack Brumbaugh Fairhaven, MD

Answer: If your neighbor is willing, division would be the best method this year. The seed heads no longer contain seeds at this late date. What you see is the outer covering (the lemna and palea) of the seeds. If you wish to collect seeds, do so when the flowers first appear.
