Bald spots in sod indicate the roots are not penetrating the native soil. In seeded lawns in can indicate high or low areas where water either remains too long or doesn't soak into the soil. I'd rake out the dead areas, sprinkle some compost in the areas and then reseed. The new grass should sprout in 7-10 days. While you're there raking, make sure the ground is level with the surrounding areas. Best wishes with your lawn.
