Unless you live in a cool summer area, Hosta's should be planted in a shady bed. The plants love moist soil so plan to dig in some organic matter prior to planting, to help the soil retain moisture. There are many, many varieties of hosta available, from blue-green to green with white margins on the leaves, from heavily veined to wavy edged. Most produce small flowers in white or light lavender, from stems 8 inches to 3 feet tall.
