The Q&A Archives: Winter Garden

Question: I want to plant a fall/winter garden. When should I start seeds and when is the best time to transplant outdoors. I live in the central valley of CA. What are the best vegetables to plant in this time?

Answer: You can sow your seeds directly outdoors in the garden. Some of the best things to plant in July include beans, beets, cucumbers and summer squash. In August you can plant seeds of beans, beets, carrots, leaf lettuces and green onions. In September plant peas, radishes, spinach, cauliflower, celery and chard. You should be able to harvest everything before the end of November. Enjoy your garden!
