The Q&A Archives: What Type Grass?

Question: My backyard is dry, hard/compacted soil, rocky, shaded and VERY slanted. What type of grass would grow here? Do I have any hope?

Answer: Fescues are the most shade tolerant grasses but they aren't very heat resistant. Bermuda thrive in the heat but won't grow in deep shade. Considering the area would be difficult to mow, and you'll need to do some extensive preparation to improve your soil prior to planting, you may want to consider growing a groundcovering plant rather than turfgrass. Ajuga, vinca, Japanese star jasmine or pachysandra will grow nicely in your gardening region and they don't need mowing!
