A rock garden is simply an area with natural rocks in it or rocks you place in the area in a natural looking arrangement. Heat loving drought tolerant plants do best in rock gardens because they can tolerate the reflected heat of the rocks. Some really hardy rock garden plants include Yarrow, Stonecress, Androsace (Rock Jasmine), Pasque Flower, Armeria, Aubrieta, Draba, Dryas, Euphorbia, Gentiana, Lewisia, Primrose, Senecia and Thyme. Zinnias might not be happy with reflected and radiated heat. I'd plant them elsewhere.
