The Q&A Archives: Tomatoes

Question: My tomatoes are getting large, but are not turning red.

Answer: It's really difficult to wait for that first ripe tomato of the season! Tomatoes need time to ripen, and nice warm weather. If your tomatoes are big and green, it's just a matter of time before they mature. You'll notice the changes if you observe them on a daily basis - first the fruit will begin to turn a lighter green with dark green shoulders, then it will turn pinkish green, and - finally - it will turn red. Just wait and watch and soon you'll be able to predict how long the other tomatoes will take to ripen, just by watching the subtle changes day by day.
