my marigolds are not growing; they lost their leaves and they look sickly as if they are dying: what could be problem be

Marigolds are annual plants and as such will flower and set seeds then die. If you do not remove the spent flowers so more flowers are produced, the plants will die after setting seeds. Collect some of the seeds and sow them and you'll get new marigold plants.
