The Q&A Archives: strange mushrooms

Question: Hi this carolyn and I have a question about some mushrooms that are growing in my new sod what are they called and are they edible or something Ive had the white caps that look like balls and the almost transparent ones that are beige in color

Answer: Mushroom growth in new sod is quite common. The mushrooms are growing because of the moist conditions and the organic debris within the sod. They will disappear once you taper off on your watering. I don't think they are edible - in fact I wouldn't even take the chance. Just consider them to be a temporary nuisance and rake them out of the lawn before they spread their spores. As soon as your sod becomes established they should stop appearing. Good luck with your sod!
