If you'd like to amend the soil you can spread 4-5 inches of organic matter over the entire planting bed and dig it in to a depth of 8-10". This will enrich the soil and help it drain well - perfect for your evergreens. After planting, spread another few inches of organic matter over the bare soil. Your new shrubs will not need to be fed until next spring. At that time, use a slow release 8-8-8 and water it in well. Best wishes with your new shrubs!
