Your shrub selection will really depend upon the amount of space you have, and how much sunshine is there. Some suggestions for a sunny site include:
Cistena, Dwarf Red Leaf Plum (P. cistena) Dainty multi-branched shrub, 6' to 10' tall. Purple foliage, light pink flowers in spring, blackish purple fruit in July.

Chokecherry (P. virginiana) - oval shaped shrub to 20' tall. Extremely hardy. Large red fruit in summer, maroon-red fall foliage.

Dwarf Flowering Almond (P. glandulosa "Sinensis") - very ornamental. Masses of double pink flowers in early April into May. Much branched vase shaped to 6' tall, 5' wide.

A shady site might be good for:
Ribes sanguineum glutinosum (Pink flowered currant); Pink flowering currant likes full shade. It is deciduous. It has large fragrant leaves and large pink flowers. The hummingbirds really like it. It is drought tolerant.

Spiraea douglasii (Western Spiraea); Western spirea is a beautiful open shrub with arching branches and attractive foliage. It has great fall color and large pink flower clusters in spring. It grows 4 to 5 ft tall.

Azaleas and camellias also like shady spots.

Good luck with your new shrubs.
