The Q&A Archives: Licorice Plant Pests

Question: What are the caterpillars that are on the leaves of my lemon licorice plant, and how can I eliminate them?

Answer: For a positive identification, you'll need to describe the caterpillar. But, before you intentionally eliminate them, the larvae of Swallowtail butterflies are attracted to anise, fennel, and other licorice-type plants. If you kill them before identifying them, you may be doing-in the next generation of beautiful butterflies! You can take one of the caterpillars to your local Cooperative Extension office for positive i.d. The office is located at 535 S. Randall Rd., St. Charles 60174-1591. Phone (709) 584-6166.
