The Q&A Archives: About Ferns

Question: Can you tell me how ferns grow. I transplanted some ferns and the leaves dried up - I figured from shock. I keep watering them. Are they dead or will new ferns grow from the root base?

Answer: There are exceptions, but most ferns are usually happiest in shady areas in cool, moist soils. They shouldn't dry out if you keep them well watered and protected from hot sunshine. The new fronds develop in the center of the plant and the older outer fronds will eventually die down and can be pruned off the plant. You didn't mention how long ago you planted your ferns. You should see some new growth within 2-3 weeks. Hope your ferns make it!
