Would like to know what steps I take to start a new flower bed around the base of my trees. I have bricks about a foot tall surrounding the base. How do I proceed from there?

The next step is to place 4-6 inches of topsoil into the planter bed and plant your flowers. I'd be cautious about adding any more topsoil over the roots of the tree - it can cause problems down the road with drainage and water retention over the root. After adding your topsoil you can plant your favorite annuals and perennials. To keep weeds at bay, spread 2-3 inches of organic matter over the bare soil between the plants. Good luck with your new planter!
