If you have a choice, go with cypress. It lasts longer and is harder so it is not as attractive to insect pests. Pine is soft and decomposes rapidly under the same climatic conditions. If you are laying mulch to suppress weeds, I'd spend a little extra money and lay weed barrier cloth down first, then cover with the mulch material of your choice. Together, the mulch and the weed barrier will keep the area weed free and the mulch will remain above ground rather than sinking down into the soil and eventually disappearing. Good luck with your landscape!
